Genealogical research in New Zealand can present a number of unique challenges. Privacy restrictions limit access to many civil registration records, while archival gaps exist due to record loss caused by natural disasters and historical administrative decisions.

There is no centralized public genealogical database in New Zealand. More recent records are maintained by the Department of Internal Affairs, while historical materials are held by Archives New Zealand, the National Library, local councils, churches, and other religious institutions. Although work began to digitize historical records, the program was later discontinued due to funding limitations, meaning that many records still require in-person access.

Most records are written in English, although documents relating to Māori communities and Whakapapa research may also be recorded in Māori. These records often require specialist cultural understanding and careful interpretation.
