Genealogical research in Greece can present several distinct challenges. Limited digitization often means that records must be accessed through in-person visits or trusted local contacts. Strict privacy laws can further restrict access, and nationwide civil registration did not begin until 1925, with earlier records typically held in church registers.

Historic events have also affected record availability. Some documents have been lost through war, fire, and natural disasters. Language can add another layer of complexity, as records may be written in modern Greek, older polytonic Greek, Ottoman Turkish, or, in some island regions, Italian.
