Genealogical research in Denmark can present several distinct challenges. Records were not standardized before the mid-nineteenth century, and many are held in regional state archives with differing local jurisdictions. In some cases, fires, war, and deterioration have also created gaps in physical parish and census records.

Language can add a further layer of complexity. Older records may be written in Danish, Latin, or Gothic handwriting, requiring both linguistic knowledge and paleographic skill.
