Genealogical research in Cambodia can present a number of challenges. Privacy laws often restrict public access to records, while very few documents are available online. In most cases, research requires in-person visits to archives, government offices, or religious institutions.

Researchers must also navigate records created in several different languages, including Khmer, French, Classical Khmer, and Pali, particularly in relation to Buddhist temple records. In addition, many historical records were destroyed during the Khmer Rouge regime in the 1970s, creating significant gaps in archival material. Civil registration in Cambodia only began in the nineteenth century, meaning earlier records are often limited or difficult to access.
