Genealogical research in Bulgaria can present several challenges. Language is often a significant factor, as records are typically kept in Bulgarian Cyrillic, while older documents may appear in Ottoman Turkish or Church Slavonic.

Nationwide civil registration did not begin until 1893, and very few records are available online, meaning that most research must be carried out through in-person archive visits.
